Secrets After Birth
Becoming new parents is a journey filled with unexpected challenges. Communication is crucial to avoid resentment and stay connected, steering clear of potential relationship breakdowns. This Parenthood Pledge, with its five themes - Chores, Childcare, Self-Care, Finances, and Parenting Style - is designed to guide and capture your first year's experiences. It encourages you to set clear 'pledges' for your parenting journey and then reflect on them, fostering a shared sense of happiness, gratitude, and appreciation.
When you become new parents, you have no idea what lies ahead. It’s not the big stuff that will break you. It will be death by 1000 cuts. If you don’t talk about the changes that are coming, you’ll find one or both of you will drown. I originally titled this ‘Parenting Charter’ and I googled to see what existed. What did I find? Divorce papers. Parenting Charters are created during divorce. I find that ironic because I’m sharing this to try and help partners stay connected and feel supported, and keep off the path to divorce!
That’s how important this is. If you don’t balance your parenting roles then one of you will feel resentful. We want you both to feel happy, grateful and appreciated.

I’ve chosen five themes to encompass in this Parenthood Pledge. Get ready for a date night and discuss these themes so you are ready to sail into parenthood. The latter pages are to capture your journey through the first year of parenthood.

Pledge Themes
Chores: This is about managing household tasks, like cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation. The key here is to organise these chores efficiently, so they integrate smoothly with your new parenting responsibilities.
Childcare: This theme dives into the direct care of your baby, covering essentials like feeding, changing nappies, bathing, and soothing. It’s the hands-on part of parenting that ensures your baby's immediate needs are met.
Self-Care: A crucial aspect often overlooked, self-care is about maintaining your well-being. It includes ensuring you get enough sleep, eat well, exercise, and relaxation. It's important to remember that taking care of yourself is just as vital as taking care of your baby.
Finances: This theme encompasses budgeting for baby expenses, and maintaining financial stability for your family.
Parenting Style: This theme is about the broader approach you take in raising your child. It includes your values, communication methods, and the overall emotional environment in your home.
